The first thing that hit Ailis when she found herself wobbling down Squire Way was the sheer sight of it.
The houses where crammed against each other like boxes of dominos. They had no roofs. In place of them were blackened rafters, broken and splintered. What was left of the windows were jagged shards of glass, penetrating the air that were rooted in their split wooden frames. The walls were crumbling and black, smears of soot blanketed the orange brickwork. Doors were missing, and the spooky clunk of Ailis’ hobnailed footsteps echoed about the cobbled alleyway, stinging the silence wi
